Allium![]() I absolutely adore alliums (and alliteration). It is an incredibly diverse genus from the giant ball-on-a-stick forms you see in all the dutch bulb catalogs to tiny graceful ones suitable for the rock garden. The genus, of course, includes onions and garlic, and all the species do have that distinctive smell if you break the leaves or bulbs, though it is not notable otherwise, and many species do have quite pleasantly fragrant flowers. The good side to that onion smell is that insects, rabbits, and deer generally find it quite unpleasant so the genus is notably pest resistant, and virtually all of them are also extremely heat and drought tolerant as well.
