Barnardia japonica

Barnardia japonica

We've grown this gorgeous little bulb for years as Scilla autumnalis (see also Propspero autumnale, another not-actually-scilla-autumnalis bulb), and just found out its REAL name. But, as the old saying goes, a Barnardia by any other name would have just as kick-ass pink bottle-brush flowers in late summer. Brigitta has masses of it seeding around in the conifer garden, and they're entirely drool-worthy. Every garden needs some. Zone 5, at least – Joseph

Bellevalia dubia

Bellevalia dubia

You'd be forgiven for mistaking this for a muscari (it was included in that genus in the past, I believe), though more intricately and vividly colored than any grape hyacinth. Flowers are an intense, almost iridescent blue tipped with green when in bud, and morph into a greenish-brown once they open. Native to the Mediterranean and of doubtful hardiness here.
